- Description:
Rat Cay is an uninhabited cay that has a well protected beach on its west side. The anchorage off of the beach is one of the deeper anchorages in the area and offers excellent protection from the NE-S. The holding is very good on the north end of the beach, but the bottom becomes rocky to the south.
For strong swimmers there are some interesting spear fishing opportunities between the rocks on the north end of the cay, but be aware that the current is very strong and a rip current is a normal occurrence. Also note that the period of Slack tide is very short, and one can only count on about 30 minutes of current free diving time. Once the tide starts to run, it will increase in velocity very quickly.
