Joes Sound
- Location: Long Island
- Lat / Lon: N 23° 37.067' / W 075° 20.533'
- Depth: 6'-10'
- Tide: 2.0'-2.5'
- Description:
The anchorage inside Joe’s Sound is the only anchorage on the west side of Long Island that provides true protection from the west.
In even the heaviest wintertime weather conditions, the anchorage will be relatively calm. The anchorage is exposed to Joe’s Sound in the east which makes it appear to be quite larger, but the area of navigable water is limited to a long and relatively narrow channel that lies 150’ off the shoreline of Galliot Cay on the west side. There will be a clearly visible nearly during sandbar on the east side. Vessels may need two anchors to minimize their swing, especially in the south part of the anchorage where the patch of navigable water is much narrower. Be sure your screens are in good order as the mosquitoes and noseeums can be fierce at sunset. Those who are successful in anchoring in Joe’s sound will be rewarded with the most protected anchorage on the west side of Long Island to ride out a major weather event.
