- Description:
Morraine Cay is a private island but in recent years the tidy cottages on the island have fallen into disrepair and appear to be abandoned. Unlike other Cays where you have to dinghy out to the reef to snorkel, Moraine Cay is perched almost directly on top of a small reef. There is enough marine life in the area that a glass-bottom bucket can provide hours of amusement from the swim step of a vessel in the anchorage.
Morraine Cay is best used as a day anchorage as prevailing conditions create an incessant swell that, while not objectionable in low wind conditions, even as little as 12 knots can cause the rolling to become pronounced. If you are unfortunate enough to be caught in over 15 kts, it can feel like a circus ride. Anyone who has been caught out here in frisky conditions will never willingly repeat the experience.
