Ludington, MI
Ludington is one of those small harbors that could easily be overlooked, but a closer look reveals a town full of charm, with plenty to see and do within easy walking distance of the waterfront. There is more to Ludington than it first reveals.
First and most unique is the historic S.S. Badger, a coal-fired steam-driven car ferry that runs between Michigan and Wisconsin, departing daily at 9:00 a.m. and returning at 7:00 p.m. The anchor-drop, 180-degree-turn for docking is quite the spectacle to watch! There are also 2-hour tours on certain Saturdays (July 4 & 24 and August 22, 2026) during the summer.
Downtown Ludington is exceptional, with more than 20 shops and over 20 restaurants, and it's located just a quarter mile from the marinas. You could easily spend a day simply wandering and exploring the town. The seasonal Friday Night Live is held weekly in downtown Ludington offering live music, games and activities. Suds on the Shore is a festival with live music, craft beers, local wine and food trucks happening August 15, 2026 at Rotary Park. If you crave the outdoors spend a day on the beach, go out on a fishing charter, float on a tube down Big Sable River, paddle a river trail, or bike/hike on one of the many trails nearby.
