Holland, MI
It should come as no surprise that the Dutch played a significant role in the founding of the town of Holland in the mid-1800s. From the Tulip Festival held each May to the Dutch windmill at the center of town, the influence of Dutch culture is evident throughout the community. Holland is located five miles up Lake Macatawa from the protected entrance to Lake Michigan, and the marinas and anchorages closest to town are in the community of Macatawa. The marinas are close to the beaches, but most activities and shopping are centered in Holland, requiring transportation such as a taxi or bus ride to reach the town's historic district. The Max Macatawa Area Express might get you where you want to go.
The center of activity in Holland is along 8th Street, where restaurants, shops, galleries, and even the visitors center are located. Late 19th-century Victorian architecture is on full display, with many historic buildings carefully repurposed for modern use. On Thursdays June through August catch the Summer Street Performers downtown.
