When cruising the waterways, finding reliable information can make all the difference in planning a successful and enjoyable voyage. Reviews by fellow boaters often serve as valuable resources, offering insights and tips about marinas, anchorages, and navigation. Here's how you can contribute meaningful and helpful reviews to the Waterway Guide community, ensuring that your fellow mariners benefit from your experiences.
Be Specific and Detailed
A useful review goes beyond stating that a place is "good" or "bad." Provide specific details about what made your experience memorable. For marinas, mention the quality of facilities such as bathrooms, laundry services, and fuel docks. If reviewing an anchorage, comment on holding ground, protection from elements, and any nearby amenities. Details help others make informed decisions based on their needs.
Include Context
Context is key. Share when you visited, as waterway conditions, marina services, and local attractions can change seasonally or due to management updates. Mentioning whether your visit was during a busy holiday weekend or a quiet off-season can also provide valuable insight into typical conditions.
Discuss Navigation and Accessibility
Navigation details are particularly crucial in boating reviews. Discuss the ease of access, any challenges you encountered, and tips for making the approach safer or easier. For example, note if the navigation charts were accurate or if there were unmarked obstacles or shallow spots.
Offer Tips and Recommendations
Your personal tips can be immensely helpful to others. Suggest the best slip for a great view, recommend local mechanics, or point out the must-visit local eateries. If you've discovered a local boating community or useful resources like nearby provisioning spots, share these finds.
Address Safety and Cleanliness
Safety and cleanliness are important to everyone. Comment on the security measures at marinas (such as gated docks or security personnel) and the cleanliness of facilities. If you notice eco-friendly practices or feel improvements are needed, mention this in your review.
Update Your Reviews
If you visit the same location multiple times, update your reviews to reflect any changes. Updated information is incredibly valuable, providing the latest insights for fellow boaters.
Examples of Great Reviews
Waterway Guide review for Green Cove Springs City Pier
"Dock is ok for smaller boats. It's far enough away from shore to be exposed even in a strong west wind. Nice city park with spring that feeds a public pool (closed November through May per a local). Spring Park Coffee shop was perfect." David
Waterway Guide review for Green Turtle Bay Resort (Boat Works)
"The Green Turtle Bay Resort is another very nice marina on the Loop. It is located just south of the Barkley Dam and Locks on the Cumberland River. Pay close attention to the well-marked entrance channel that is south of the marina. The transient docks are just past the fuel dock and conveniently close to the marina amenities. The docks are well-maintained with wide slips, long finger piers, and very accessible power/water pedestals. The marina's restrooms/showers and laundry room were very clean. It has a well-stocked ships store, spa, swimming pool, gift store, Tiki Turtle bar and grill, and the Pier 32 restaurant are all onsite. The marina also has a full-service maintenance facility onsite that can manage just about any repairs. We stayed here at the end of the season, so the pool, gift shop, and Pier 32 restaurant were closed. The marina has a courtesy car, and golf carts are available for rent, which can be driven into Grand River to visit the small, but well-stocked grocery store, liquor store, post office and interesting shops. We dined at Patti's and had a wonderful meal. The grounds around Patti's have many interesting shops." David M.
Waterway Guide review for Alligator River - Newport News Point (Anchorage)
"The night we stayed, the wind was very light so there was no issue holding but when we pulled the anchor up, we had a very heavy load of dark thick mud. There is plenty of room in this anchorage and it is easy to go far enough in so you don't feel any ICW wake. There were some hunters out on the water at sunup shooting fowl. Other than that it was a very peaceful anchorage." G. Jay Nelson
