Safe Harbor Charleston City Megadock Phase 2 Expansion Completed
Date Posted: March 31, 2026

With the completion of Phase 2 of its Megadock expansion, Safe Harbor Charleston City strengthens its position as a premier destination for transient vessels and superyachts alike. The 2,200 feet of contiguous floating fuel dock and addition of advanced electrical infrastructure combine to make the facility a strategic and well-equipped marina in one of the favorite cities along the east coast of the U.S.

A Strategic Location on the ICW and Ashley River

Situated along the Ashley River just outside historic downtown Charleston, the marina has long been recognized as one of the most accommodating destinations for cruising vessels. Boaters traveling the Intracoastal Waterway along the Southeast coast are drawn to Charleston for its culture, and the marina's expansion now delivers the scale, capability, and location to enhance that experience. Approaching the marina is straightforward, with well-marked channels welcoming boats with wide-open water, sweeping Lowcountry panoramas, and a protected basin just minutes from the heart of downtown Charleston.

Waterway Guide President, Graham Jones, said, "When visiting the marina earlier this year, I was overwhelmed by the attention to detail and overall planning that went into this project. Relocating a channel, moving and expanding docks, and creating a destination for vessels large and small is important for our industry. I believe this is a valuable project for Charleston and the boating community."

A Megadock Built for Scale and Capability

The newly completed Phase 2 extension adds significant docking space and infrastructure upgrades, allowing the marina to accommodate:

  • A total of 2,200 feet of contiguous floating fuel dock capable of accommodating vessels 35'-455' in length.

In addition, the project included keeping the original Megadock and creating a south basin, forming a new breakwater and strengthening the marina's overall dock layout. All power pedestals have been replaced and expanded, further enhancing stability and long-term durability. Additional upgrades will be released as the project progresses, with full completion anticipated in 2027.

Custom Power Capabilities for Modern Vessels

One of the most significant upgrades in this expansion is the addition of advanced electrical infrastructure designed specifically for today's most demanding vessels.

Safe Harbor Charleston City has introduced two new Magnus 250-kVA frequency converters, supplied by American Standard Power, enabling the marina to convert 480V, 3-phase, 60Hz shore power into 400V/380V, 50Hz power commonly required by many international superyachts.

With the Magnus Parallel Box system, the marina can deliver a single 500-kVA load through one shore connection, providing a level of dockside power that is rarely available at most East Coast marinas.

For captains and engineers, this capability eliminates one of the most common logistical challenges when planning stops: reliable, high-capacity shore power for large vessels.

Safe Harbor Charleston City is designed with visiting boaters in mind, offering an experience that caters to a wide range of vessels and cruising styles. Marina amenities include:

  • Diesel fuel options available across entire Megadock
  • Pump-out services
  • Clean restroom and shower facilities
  • Laundry facilities
  • Complimentary WiFi

Boaters traveling the Intracoastal Waterway will appreciate that Safe Harbor Charleston City isn't just a convenient stop, it's a destination that sets a new standard for what a marina can be. Its position makes it an ideal waypoint between major cruising hubs such as Myrtle Beach and Savannah, and a must-stop destination for those exploring the Southeast coastline.
