Bay side of South Gulf Cove Lock, shoaling
- Date Reported: Dec 8, 2021
- Reporter: Gene Fuller

- Description:
The shoaling outside the lock into South Gulf Cove continues to worsen. I traveled out of the lock at 2 pm on December 7, 2021 and found that the nominal zero-tide depth is now less than 4 feet. My calculations are as follow. Predicted tide at El Jobean was -5 inches. Tidal anomaly as reported at both Fort Myers and St. Petersburg was +9 inches at that time. My own measurement at my home dock in Punta Gorda was an anomaly of +10 inches. There was very little wind. Therefore the actual tide should have been around +4 or +5 inches. My boat is carefully measured to draw 4 feet 2 inches. I slightly nudged the bottom just outside of the lock. Therefore I conclude that the actual zero tide depth is now less than 4 feet by a couple of inches. The entire channel is very shallow, but the spot near the outer lock entrance is especially bad.
