- Date Reported: Dec 16, 2025
- Reporter: Waterway Guide Staff
- Source: USCG District 9
- Description:
St. Marys River to Au Sable Point - Temporary Regulated Navigation Area
A temporary regulated navigation area is in effect in support of Operation TACONITE from December 11, 2025, through May 20, 2026. To enhance coordination of icebreaking resources, the Captain of the Port Northern Great Lakes directs shipping companies to provide estimated times of arrival for vessels operating in ice-affected waters within the area of responsibility.
At the start of each voyage or transit, shipping companies are directed to provide ETAs for vessels transiting downbound to Whitefish Point, upbound to Detour Reef Light, eastbound to Lansing Shoal Light, westbound to Round Island, or arriving at or departing from western Lake Superior ports and terminals. Similarly, vessels operating in Lake Michigan in the presence of ice should provide ETAs when entering the Sturgeon Bay Ship Canal or Rock Island Passage, or when arriving at or departing from ports and terminals in Escanaba, Green Bay, Marinette, or other Green Bay locations.
Estimated times of arrival must be received at least six hours prior to arrival at the specified points, or once daily by 10:00 a.m. Eastern. Position reports may be filed with Sault Traffic by landline at 906-635-3299, by fax at 906-635-3238, or by email at [email protected]. ETAs must be updated whenever the arrival time changes by more than six hours.
Mariners are requested to establish VHF radio contact with the servicing icebreaker on VHF-FM Channel 16 approximately one hour before reaching the appropriate service area.
