PA: Delaware River Main Channel, General/Bridges/Construction

  • Date Reported: Dec 16, 2025
  • Reporter: Waterway Guide Staff
  • Source: USCG District 5
  • Description:

Delaware River Main Channel - Bridge Construction and Navigation Restrictions
    Darby Creek, Mile 1.3

Bridge construction is underway to replace the 420 State Route Northbound and Southbound Bridges across Darby Creek at Mile 1.3, between Prospect Park Borough and Tinicum Township, Delaware County, Pennsylvania. Construction activities began in March 2024 and are expected to continue through July 12, 2027.

Throughout the construction period, tugs, material barges, manlift barges, and support vessels will be operating in the vicinity of the existing and new bridge structures. Cofferdams will be positioned within the navigational channel, reducing horizontal clearance to approximately 45 feet.

Demolition of the existing 420 State Route Northbound Bridge will occur January 5 through January 9, 2026, with an alternate demolition window of January 12 through January 16, 2026. Demolition will be conducted 24 hours per day, Monday through Friday. During demolition, a 40-foot work barge will be positioned within the navigational channel and will be unable to relocate.

For navigation safety, vessels should not transit through the existing or new bridge structures during active construction and demolition operations and should plan transits accordingly.

R.E. Pierson Construction Company vessels will monitor VHF-FM Channels 13 and 16 when work is in progress. The PennDOT Construction Manager may be contacted at (610) 476-7874. R.E. Pierson Construction Company may be contacted at (856) 373-8796, (609) 774-2453, or (609) 774-5554. MSI #33919.
