MD: Patapsco River - Fort Mchenry Channel, Installation of Production Piles

  • Date Reported: Feb 4, 2026
  • Reporter: Waterway Guide Staff
  • Source: USCG District 5
  • Description:

From September 9, 2025, through October 1, 2026, Kiewit will continue marine construction activities in the Fort McHenry Channel associated with installation of production piles for the main foundation piers near the original Francis Scott Key Bridge alignment, between Hawkins Point and Sollers Point.

Derrick crane Weeks 533 and associated supply barges will be positioned east of the Francis Scott Key Bridge. This work is scheduled for completion on or about October 1, 2026. All derrick cranes and barges will be positioned adjacent to the north and south sides of the navigable channel and will not impede vessel traffic within the channel.

Operations will occur 12 hours per day, 6 days per week, with barges remaining on position 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Barge positioning and ancillary activities may occur 24/7. The four corners of each barge will be marked with steady white lights visible up to 2 miles.

A No Entry Safety Zone has been established extending 500 feet east/downstream and 500 feet west/upstream of the original Francis Scott Key Bridge alignment between Hawkins Point and Sollers Point, delineated by white marker buoys with slow-flashing white lights. A 6-knot enforceable No Wake Zone has also been established extending 1,500 feet east/downstream and 1,500 feet west/upstream of the same alignment and is similarly marked.

Vessels navigating the area shall use the Federal Channel and Buffer Zone and are requested to operate at their slowest safe speed. Barges will be non-maneuverable while moored and will require tug assistance to shift position.

    Contractor vessels will monitor VHF-FM Channels 16 and 13. Kiewit on-site construction leads may be contacted at (201) 832-5004, (925) 324-6503, or (908) 463-9049. MSI #36151.
