NC: Masonboro Inlet - Wrightsville Channel, Additional Drilling of bore holes

  • Date Reported: Apr 22, 2026
  • Reporter: Waterway Guide Staff
  • Source: USCG District 5
  • Description:

Mariners are advised that subsurface exploration and geotechnical drilling will be conducted on the United States 74 Bridge over Banks Channel from April 27, 2026, to May 8, 2026. The work will involve:

    • Drilling five borings through the bridge deck into the subsurface.
    • Temporary installation of steel casing (3–6 inches diameter) and flexible water hoses (2–3 inches diameter) within the waterway.
    • Work hours: Monday through Friday, between 7:00 AM and 5:00 PM.
    • Only one bridge span will be impacted at a time; all other spans will remain open to navigation.
    • Horizontal clearance at the affected span will be reduced to approximately 15 feet on each side of the casing; vertical clearance will not be affected.
    • All obstructions will be removed prior to each weekend.
    • Temporary signage and lighted buoys with flashing white lights will be placed at the active work span to warn approaching boaters.
    • If casing remains in the waterway during non-working hours, it will be illuminated with a spotlight.

No VHF communications are planned. Mariners should adjust their transit plans accordingly and exercise caution when transiting. For further information, contact the North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT).
