A cable ferry crosses the Wicomico River at Upper Ferry, 15 miles above the mouth. The ferry operates only during daylight hours. The cable, held taut by winches ashore, is suspended at or near the water's surface at all times during daylight hours but dropped to the bottom during non daylight hours.
The signal for lowering the cable is one blast on the whistle by a transiting vessel. The ferry slips are marked as a ferry crossing and warning signs are posted up and downstream of the crossing. Caution should be exercised when navigating in the area.
DO NOT ATTEMPT TO PASS A MOVING CABLE FERRY.
