FL Inlet Caution: Port Canaveral Inlet
- Date Reported: Jun 2, 2022
- Reporter: Jani Parker
- Source: Waterway Guide Staff
- Description:
Overview: Well-marked, deep ship inlet protected from the north by the long and shallow Southeast Shoal off Cape Canaveral. The lock inside the inlet eliminates current, making this one of the easier to use inlets on the Florida coast.
Approach: Canaveral Harbor Approach Channel Lighted Buoy "4'' (2.5 sec) is located at N 28° 22.618/W 080° 31.720'.
Navigation: Southbound cruisers can make for N 28° 23.490'/W 80° 33.000' after rounding red buoy "4," while northbound craft could go in much closer, at N 28° 24.570'/W 80° 34.480'. The channel is well marked; simply run down the channel, turning due west at Middle Reach. Cape Canaveral Lock (321-783-5421) operates from 6:00 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. year-round.
Webcam: For a live view of the inlet visit Port Canaveral Webcam.
Cautions & Hazards: Coming from the north, the Southeast Shoal off Cape Canaveral keeps boaters several miles offshore. Stay east of W 80° 27.000' before turning in to the sea buoy after rounding red buoy "4" at N 28° 23.470'/W 80° 29.100' marking the southern edge of the shoal. Note that this cuts off the offshore waypoint. From the south, cruisers can approach from within 0.5 nm of the shore in depths greater than 20 feet MLW.
ICW Connection: Inlet is 7.5 nm from ICW Mile 894 (across the Banana River and through the Barge Canal).
- Lat / Lon: N 28° 24.580' / W 080° 35.245'
