Coecles Harbor - Shelter Island

Description: The designated anchorage is just to port after entry and is clearly marked by orange and white markers. Be sure to turn to port well before reaching green can buoy "7" and the rocks that lie just beyond that buoy. This area is a designated No-Discharge Zone and, from May 15 to September 15, anchorage is limited to a 48-hour stay, with a posted $250 fine and towing fees assessed against violators. For a small fee,Coecles Harbor Marina offers use of its dinghy dock and facilities to those at anchor.

Would be a great anchorage if not for the policies of the local harbormaster. You are restricted from anchoring except for a marked zone that is a good distance from any shore access. The anchorage zone is large enough, and there is good protection. There are a few small restaurants in town but they are a long dinghy ride from the anchorage and then a long walk from the marina. It isn't at all clear why this anchorage is popular. There are better alternatives nearby.

A large anchorage with lots of room, came in on a Saturday afternoon from Port Jefferson and it was crowded with smaller power boats and a handful of 30-50'ers. Dropped anchor in 9' mud. Most boats left before sunset. It's one big No Wake zone: well protected and quiet at night, busy during the day but no rolling. The shore is one big preserve with no access above the high tide mark. It's a 2.2 mile dinghy ride to Coecles Harbor Marina if you don't want to pay for a mooring. The well stocked IGA (wine garden across the street) is a mile from the marina, full service restaurants ($$$$) another mile after that in Dering Harbor ( ferry dock to Greenport).
