Enter Hurricane Island North Anchorage towards the RDB across from the Red Buoy at mm 29.5. Aim for the middle of the channel in no less than 10' (normal pool) continuing past the tip of the island and into the chute. There is plenty of swing room to sit on one anchor with good protection for wind and waves and, in most circumstances, boat traffic. No cell service.

When you look at the map of the Illinois River, the Hurricane Island North anchorage is at the start of an alternate route called the Dark Chute. Starting at mile marker 28.4 and continuing down the west sides of Hurricane and Diamond Islands, it empties back into the main channel at marker 22.6. There are charted depths greater than 10' np the entire length of the six mile channel and widths are about 300'. Anchoring is therefore available anywhere in this six mile cut. It is simply a question as to how far away from the main channel you wish to be.

The Dark Chute is a popular area, especially on weekends and in good weather. There is a boat launch behind Diamond Island so there will be more traffic there.
