Very busy anchorage with what appeared to be long term boats. It took a number of attempts to get our anchor set and moved two times prior to setting it where we did. We were closer to the channel than I liked, but we were not in the channel and kept plenty of swing room. Once set we had great holding. We had some wake issues even though this is suppose to be a no wake zone. The city docks have water available and are great to tie up to. Great location to restaurants and a Publix is less than ½ mile away. We will definitely anchor here again.

Very sheltered, especially from the north, west, and south; the closer you get to land, the more sheltered it is. Unlike so many other anchorages in Florida, this one seems to be used by people actually occupying their boats; no wrecks were in sight, although I suspect some folks are living there for more than just a few days or weeks. Easy dinghy access to shore at the free docks with access to garbage pails and a public restroom a few blocks away. Lots of restaurants, bars, and shops on shore. Great access to grassy areas for pet relief. Publix is about 1/2 mile away from the Fern Street dock. Some street/city noise. I wish I'd stopped here on my way south. I'd definitely stay here again.

Good amount of current kept our chain taut often, but very good holding in mudd. Easy access to the two public free docks (we actually tied up to the south one for about 2 hours in the morning with no issues. There is a dumpster for trash at the end of that dock and a beautiful park and lots of restaurants and shopping. Publix is about a 5 minute bike ride/15 min walk...there were free shuttles around as well, not sure of all the stops they go to. We really enjoyed our night here.

The popular anchorage between the two free docks was not there?! The annual Int'l Boat Show was coming to town. So, there was a networks of docks and lots of big yachts waiting their turn to be admitted into that area. Fun to listen to all the logistics on VHF 71. SO, we had to anchor in the SW corner of this area between the two bridges. LOTS of current there, so we were often broadside to the wind and weather. Setting a stern anchor solved that problem. It was a New Moon tide, and two sailboats broke free and were run up against the nearby bridge to the south of us.
We returned a few weeks later. The boat show was gone, so we were able to anchor between the two free docks. Much less current in here. There were no boats on the northerly free dock, and it appeared to be cordoned off to boats. Pedestrians were frequenting that longer north dock. The boats tied up to the shorter south dock appeared to stay there for days. So, we tied up and spent one night there. Lyft to get to Publix and Supercuts, got a lot done ashore (without having to pay for a slip!!!).View location on the Waterway Guide Explorer

Holding was great even during the heaviest rain and wind. Getting the dog off the boat a few times a day was very easy with two very accessible docks just a few feet away.
There is also plenty to do with restaurants and shopping just a short walk from the docks and a free city trolley to take you into the City Center. There is also a grocery store just a short bike or trolley ride away. On Saturday mornings just across the street from the docks is a great farmers market. Having been traveling South since August from Maine, I can honestly say this was my favorite anchorage South of Newport.View location on the Waterway Guide Explorer
