East of Island at Esopus Anchorage Scouting Report. At approximately 84.5 LDB there is a bank that looks like it would make an excellent anchorage for an overnight stay in all but the worst weather. Protected by the island from the main channel, wakes should not be a significant problem. With the exception of N/S winds the anchorage should be protected from waves. Current will be tidal and may reach 1.5-2mph so be sure to have your anchor well set. It is important to note that the shore bank shoals rapidly from depths of 30 feet to places where herons are standing in less than two feet of water. There is a 3+ foot tidal range so take care exactly where you drop your anchor and make sure you have the scope laid to counter the ebb tidal flow of about 1.5mph. The bottom is reported to be mud. In all but the heaviest of breezes your boat will be oriented N/S with the changing tidal flow. Dinghy upstream to Mills Norrie State Park Marina if you really need to get to shore. The bank should easily accommodate 5+ boats in a N/S line as long as everyone has agreed to the anchoring depth and the anchor scope. We will definitely keep this on our list of possible anchor.

    Esopus Island Anchorage

    2019-06-02

One of the few anchorages on Hudson River

We anchored along with 1 other boat for the night. It took 2 attempts with our Rochna anchor before it held in 17’ of water on a hard bottom. The depths dropped off fast and overnight at low tide, our 4.5’ draft boat’s stern was on the bottom briefly. The anchor came up clean. It worked, but probably wouldn’t anchor here again.
