If you are going north you can leave the channel north of Green "7" and cross the flats to Red "2PC". After rounding the corner the creek widens and carries no less than 9 feet of water the entire 1.5 miles up the creek to the anchorage icon. The entire south shore and half of the north will provide good anchoring and shelter from winds and waves from any direction. Simply choose your spot for the expected winds. We anchored off the northern shore just beyond the Pungo Creek Canal in 10 feet of water with good holding. There is no tide here but water depths will vary as much as much as a foot with strong winds from either the north or the south. There is no noticeable current, we swung with the wind and did not budge during the night. There was little traffic and little road noise from the town.
Shore access is about three miles away by fast dinghy. Take advantage of the Belhaven Town Pier. Cellular service is very good for the three major carriers.
If you are not planning on going into town, Pungo Creek is actually a better anchorage than the town harbor. There is more room and less traffic. The off/on distance from the creek is about a mile longer than from the Belhaven Harbor, but the convenience and comfort of the creek anchorage is much better. We have now anchored in both places and will come back to the creek for overnights in the future.View location on the Waterway Guide Explorer
