Lighthouse Point

Description:
The lighthouse at southern tip of Eleuthera is a tiny structure featuring an automated flashing white light on a pole adjacent to a small windowless hut. The light is visible at night at great distances, but by day it almost disappears into the grove of trees that surrounds it. Beneath the lighthouse is a small anchorage that provides surprisingly good protection from the north through east. The holding, however, is challenging as the bottom is hard and one must find a bowl of sand to place the anchor. There is a small beach below the lighthouse where it is possible to go ashore if needed.
The anchorage for now is very remote, but there is a major construction project that is underway less than a mile away. A pier is being constructed that will extend several hundred yards out from shore for large cruise ships to land in all weather conditions. Once the project is complete the tranquility of the spot will be severely compromised. As it is the sound of pile driving and heavy construction equipment can be heard clearly during the daylight hours.

Great anchorage for staging to or from Cat Island to the East. Feels remote even thogh only a few hours sail south of Rock Sound settlement. Cruise Ship Dock will open June 2024, and perhaps will affect tranquility. Hike to abandoned lighthouse was interesting walk, and views from top of cliffs on all sides made the climb worth it. Beautiful sand beach for land access, so good for pet or crew walks.
