Free Dock Review for Kaskaskia Lock Wall

Second time staying here (last June 2017 and October 31st, 2018) both times during flooding on Upper Mississippi. Courtesy call to lockmaster appreciated. 6 Loopers tied to floating concrete pier on dam side of the lock with room for a couple more on rainy Halloween. No current or debris to worry about overnight. You can stretch your legs a bit walking back and forth on the pier but no access to shore without a dinghy. Easily dinghy to shore at campground boat ramp (no facilities). 110 power receptacles on pier but limited use (Resetting individual GFCI will not reset breaker circuits to the pier after overloading one trips them all)...power management required if you use it.

Anchorage was excellent in 8 to 10' nearer to Frenchman's Creek East of R8 buoy. Small commercial fishing boats and locals use Frenchman Creek but was minimal wake and calm after locals returned from sunset cruises. Excellent sunset views from here, but would be obscured by island where Anchorage us shown in WWG. Great Verizon service. Road noise from approach bridge to Tampa bay Sunshine Skyway bridge is noticeably quieter after sundown commuter traffic lessens. Great staging anchorage to cross Tampa Bay and return to Intracoastal Waterway.View location on the Waterway Guide Explorer

Excellent holding and protected from wakes from nearby channel. Boat ramp and picnic area for dinghy access to shore for pets. Very few crab trap buoys (saw 2 or 3 only) so very usable. Depth at Anchorage was 14' just inside the entrance to the West. Great Verizon service. Beautiful sunset views as well as moonrise views. Three destroyed vessels visible at shore/into treeline from Hurricane Michael. Salvage operations underway in coves at Panama City, so these may be removed very soon

Anchored on hump in front of island in 11' and enjoyed amazing sunset and sunrise views. If traveling with pets and a dinghy, you could dinghy pets to the island so they can stretch legs and relieve themselves. Only a few houses along the shoreline of the bay. You will be off the grid here...Verizon service was intermittent at best.

Marina Review for Hoppie's Marine Service

They lost a barge/docking space, so call ahead to ensure there is room to overnight. October 30th, 2018: 5 Loopers filled their available space on the main barge docks with room for one more on their smaller upstream barge dock. Fern passed baton to daughter Debbie while she recovers from knee surgery. Debbie also does an excellent job of briefing on what to expect between Hoppies and Paducah KY. We changed our plans and opted not to anchor at Boston Bar MM7 during these unusual fall flooding conditions after Debbie's advisory.

Marina Review for Port Charles Harbor

October 29th, 2018: Great alternative to Alton marina due to fast flood currents sucking water out of Alton marina. Four Loopers pulled into Port Charles Harbor marina at the same time and marina staff directed us to our slips and coordinated taking turns at their fuel dock for fueling and pumpouts. Only one vessel at a time could be at fuel dock because their dredge barge was on other side. Diesel fuel price was $3.46 same price as Hoppies. Watch entry and exit for debris coming fast with current and give a little throttle to get in/out safely as you make the turn into/out of marina entrance

Good holding and no need for aft anchor; current kept us from swinging. Unusual flooding raised depths significantly

A dozen boats were there when we stayed two nights and still plenty of room without feeling crowded. Excellent mud holding with very little grass in 12 - 15 feet at end of the bay. Small granite island with a couple trees is sloped toward waters edge and used for dinghy access to exercise pets and allow them to do their business. Peaceful tranquility awaits. Boaters respect one another here and didn't run generators overnight. Locals navigation tip: follow charted 20+ feet and stay to port side of island as you enter the bay (it looks like you can go straight ahead but don't or you will rapidly run out of water). Verizon cell service was ok...could post pix to Facebook and send/receive email. Shore access restricted due to private land ownership.

Tour boats take up entire floating dock. Tour boat captain requested we move way back on concrete wall to give him room to maneuver. There is very little water at the wall...we were churning up bottom. Restaurant was great...good food and service.
