The Chicago River offers fantastic downtown sight-seeing. The river is a vital link between the Great Lakes and the Mississippi River. The Chicago River includes 18 movable downtown bridges requiring lifts for vessels with significant air drafts. While there is almost no commercial river traffic that requires bridge lifts, these bridges are raised for the biannual migration of sailboats to and from Lake Michigan.
Every year, the Chicago River is dyed green to celebrate St. Patrick's Day.
