The bridge operates on the following schedule. (1) The draw shall open on signal at any time for commercial vessels carrying liquefied flammable gas or other hazardous materials. (2) The draw shall be closed from 6:30 a.m. to 8:30 a.m. and from 3:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m., Monday through Friday, except Federal holidays (i) The draw need not open during the hours listed above for the passage of recreational for commercial vessels that do not qualify under paragraph (d)(2)(ii) of this section, which states that commercial cargo vessels, including tugs, and tugs with tows must provide at least 2 hours advance notice to the Gilmerton Bridge at 757-485-5567. Note: Pleasure craft will not be granted an opening during the hours listed above with or without advance notice. (3) The draw shall open on signal at all other times.

Draft: 5.0'Sunday 11/5 - We arrived right before 11 am. Another sail had been waiting. Advised that they only open 3 times a day. 9am, 12pm and 6 pm.

Draft: 4.5'The Gilmerton Bridge will not open unless the RR bridge #7 is open. There's no reason for it to open because the RR bridge clearance is only 7" and they want to keep the traffic flowing. If the RR bridge is open make sure you ask the Gilmerton Bridge for an opening, it doesn't open automatically if the RR bridge is open. I've seen several sail boats waiting when they didn't ask for a request to open.
