Mackinac Island, MI
Mackinac Island is a favorite destination of many Great Lakes boaters. Often called the "Jewel of the Great Lakes", it is one of the most unique islands in North America. The island has an expansive history dating back thousands of years. It was home to the Anishinaabe people and became the collection point of the fur trade heading to Europe. The island was a strategic hotspot during the American Revolution when Fort Mackinac was built, and later, wealthy families built vacation homes in elaborate Victorian cottages along its bluffs to escape the city. Visitors can explore this remarkable history firsthand through museums, Fort Mackinac's extensive exhibits, and the island's preserved historic downtown where horses, bicycles and walking remain the only means of transport.
The island's most prominent hotel is the Grand Hotel built in 1887. It has been serving vacationers ever since with its grand architecture and world's largest porch. The porch and lobby can be toured for a fee. The waterfront buildings of downtown and Main Street are adjacent to the harbor and are the heart of the island. Known for its legendary fudge, the island is home to seven different fudge shops, all making their sweet confection on site. The vast array of shops, restaurants and entertainment are perfect for wandering. The clip-clopping of horses, the ringing of bicycle bells and the sound of Fort Mackinac's bugle and cannon set the tone.
The island has many natural features to enjoy. Winding along the shoreline is a paved 8.2-mile loop perfect for bicycle riders of all ages with limited elevation change. There are multiple bicycle rental shops within walking distance of the marina. In the island's hilly interior, quiet walking paths wind through towering trees to natural features like Cave of the Woods and Sugar Loaf. Arch Rock, a beautiful natural limestone formation, can be accessed from the interior trails or outer loop.
In July, Mackinac Island marks the finish line for the longest running yacht races in the Great Lakes: the Chicago Yacht Club Race to Mackinac, an annual event since 1908, and the Bayview Mackinac Boat Race since 1925.
