Milwaukee, WI
Milwaukee, the second-largest city on Lake Michigan, comes with a delightful problem: overabundance. Museums, galleries, historic architecture, breweries, bars, restaurants, parks and shops offer more options than even an extended stay could accommodate, let alone a quick two-day stopover. Making choices can be a bit overwhelming, but will be worth the effort.
A good place to start is the historic 3rd Ward. While there's still plenty to see, everything is within easy walking distance of the local marinas, making exploration manageable. Dining alone poses a challenge: we lost count after spotting more than 30 highly rated restaurants tucked into the Ward's streets. For a simpler approach, the Milwaukee Public Market offers a dozen vendors serving a wide variety of food, with tables ready for a relaxed sit-down meal. The only question that remains is: how do you choose?
Dining isn't the city's only "problem." Veterans Park, Lakeshore State Park, and the Riverwalk are all within easy walking distance of the marinas. There are more than a dozen museums to choose from: from the massive Discovery World Science & Technology Center and the Harley-Davidson Museum to the quirky National Bobblehead Hall of Fame and Museum. For entertainment and festivals, at least a dozen waterfront venues host national acts during the season. And of course, no visit to Milwaukee is complete without remembering that Pabst is the beer that put the city on the map.
