Port Washington, WI
Located midway between Milwaukee and Sheboygan, Port Washington makes a convenient and welcoming stopover for cruising skippers on the western shore of Lake Michigan. Its well-protected artificial harbor provides good shelter from the lake, and the local marina is known for competitively priced fuel as well as repair services.
Historically, Port Washington was an important hub of the freshwater commercial fishing industry, and was the homeport of many specialized Lake Michigan fishing boats. While commercial fishing still exists today, the harbor is now more closely associated with charter and recreational sport fishing.
Though modest in size, the city offers most essentials for visiting boaters. The historic downtown is best explored on foot. Visitors can pick up a map at the Port Washington Chamber of Commerce, located inside the historic Pebble House at 126 E. Grand Ave. Navigate Ozaukee County with Ozaukee County Transit Services, an on-demand ride share.
One of the city's signature events is Port Fish Day, held the third Saturday in July. Billed as the world's largest one-day outdoor fish fry, the celebration serves 40,000 fish-and-chips dinners and features a charity run, a parade along Franklin Street, multiple music stages, carnival arcade and rides, an arts and crafts show, a classic car show, and fireworks.
