  • Reviews Summary

The reviews for Capt Hiram's in Sebastian highlight a mix of experiences, particularly for boaters and their pets. Here are the key points:

    1. Anchorage Conditions: Reviewers note varying depths for anchoring, with some areas being shallow (around 2-4 feet at low tide) and others offering better holding in 8-10 feet of water. The anchorage is generally exposed to wind and wakes, especially from the east and southeast, but some spots provide protection from north and west winds.

    2. Pet Accessibility: There are mixed feelings about the suitability for pets. While some reviewers found nearby small islands with beach access for dogs, others reported difficulties in getting pets ashore, suggesting that those traveling with pets might want to consider other locations.

    3. Local Amenities: Capt Hiram's offers a lively atmosphere with food, drinks, and music, especially on weekends. Nearby attractions include Squid Lips restaurant, Tiki Beach Bar, and Mel Fisher's Treasure Museum, all within walking or dinghy distance.

    4. Activities: The area is popular for watching SpaceX rocket launches, and several reviewers mentioned enjoying this experience. There are also opportunities for snorkeling and swimming in nearby state park waters.

    5. Overall Experience: Reviewers generally appreciated the friendly staff and the vibrant local scene, but they cautioned about the shallow waters and the need for local knowledge to navigate safely. The area is described as quiet at night, making it a pleasant spot for overnight anchoring.

In summary, Capt Hiram's is a lively destination for boaters, especially those interested in local attractions and events, but it may pose challenges for those with pets and requires careful navigation due to varying water depths.

2/9/2026: This is our fourth trip to Capt Hiram's, Sebastian to Watch SpaceX rocket launches!!!!
#1. Stay in channel, shallows! I have anchored both south of small island at 3' MLW. I have anchored just a bit south outside of Hiram's channel at 4.5'; others have noted some deeper water, I did Not want to search!
#2. This is primarily AICW open water to all but a west wind. The AICW channel is a small distance away from anchorage, so most wakes loose energy before rocking your boat.
#3. Small islands with small beach for dogs are just a seashell throw away. Restaurants and bars (customers) do not want your dogs on property.
#4. Why you came...For the FUN of it. Capt Hiram's and SandBar with food, drink, music and games, are lively on weekends. Just to the north (walk/dinghy) is restaurant SquidLips. Just to the South (short walk) is local Mel Fishers Treasure Museum. Go! Close to that is Tiki Sandbar with bar food and music waterside. Shore Access by dinghy is welcome by all restaurants.

Not great for boats with pets. Getting them to shore other than the small spoil island was next to impossible. Recommend different city if u have pets that need to go ashore.

2' at "high tide", couldn't even get in from either north or south approach. Ended up anchoring behind a small island a bit further south. Some N wind protection, lots of wake from ICW.

Must enter through the marked channel.

1/30/24: Happy New Year. Came up to Sebastian to watch two SpaceX rocket launches. Anchored just off Capt Hirams Resort (friendly crew). Must enter through market channel (4'LMW). Anchorage is on South side of small spoil island where there are #5 wrecked sailboats, and what appears to be an abandoned sailboat at anchor. The depth here was 3' at full moon low tide! You are Open to E and SE wind and wakes; some protection from N and W.
Shore has Capt Hirams restaurant, bar, music with a country & Key West vibe. Walk to Squib Lipps Restaurant, Tiki Beach Bar, Mel Fishers Treasures, others.

We anchored at Sebastian Beach on the east side of the ICW close to the shore. There was great holding and anchor came up clean and it protected us from the East winds. There were several great spots to take the dog to the beach where there was grass also.

Anchored here for 12 hours in 10-12kn wind. Current was negligible. Set Mantus 45 with 60' of 3/8" G4 in 8' of water. Some vegetation on bottom, but once set held great. Great spot to watch launches as well. Lots of dolphin.

Shallow draft only. Good holding but exposed to wind and waves. Quiet at night. Short dinghy ride to courtesy docks with access ladders to climb up at Captain Hirams. Short walk to Wal-Mart.

We stayed at an anchor spot near the northeast side of the inlet in 8-10 feet of water. 6 inch tide at this spot but a good current. Only anchor here on a low wind day as it is exposed in all directions. It is a short dingy ride to the basin to the north side of the inlet just after the causeway for snorkeling and swimming. It is a State Park for Sebastian. Visibility for snorkeling is fair.

    • WG Editor Comment:

Getting clarification on sentence about dinghy.
