Frenchman Bay, ME
Frenchman Bay is 4 miles wide, 10 miles long and easy to navigate, and it offers dramatic views of Mount Desert and the bluffs of the Schoodic Peninsula to the east.
A group of islands with deep channels between them cuts across the bay about halfway up, creating shelter for the upper bay.
It is a spectacular run up the bay along sea-washed cliffs past Thunder Hole (where you can hear the surf crashing against the rocks at the right tidal stage), Sand Beach (behind Old Soaker) and great inland mountains.
