Mount Desert Island
Samuel de Champlain named this large magnificent island L’Isle de Monts Desert when he visited in 1604. Even though some visitors pronounce the name like “dessert,” locals place the accent on the first syllable for the bare, "desert-like" mountaintops.
Mount Desert Island is Maine's largest coastal island and has several welcoming harbors. Cadillac Mountain is the island's highest point, and there is much for the outdoor enthusiast to enjoy on Mount Desert Island.
