It is well protected in all but easterlies and easterly swells. Holding is good in mud and sand, with better ground being to the north east in the cove just off of the breakwater. But this comes with less wind protection from the lee of Richmond Island. Other than hauling up to the gravel beach in the dinghy, there are no public facilities, or access to transportation unless you are willing to walk at least 2 miles or convince a ride share to traverse a series of narrow winding roads, of which the last 3/4ths of a mile is dirt.

Draft: 4.0'Overall Rating:4Holding:5Wind Protection:3Current Flow:3Wake Protection:4Scenic Beauty:5Shore Access:4Pet Friendly:4Cell Service:5We anchored here twice this Summer (2021) both times with great results.
Our first time there were about ten other boats but still plenty of room to swing even in this deep anchorage with everyone using long rodes.
Shore access is to the surrounding beaches including the island. The hike around the island is really nice, though it's covered in sheep, goat, and goose poop, along with all the bugs that go with that.
Wind protection is actually pretty minimal - we were seeing 15 to 20 kts in the anchorage after sailing in from the ocean where we also had 15 to 20 kts. But there is excellent wave protection for all but east. In that circumstance just go around to the southwest side of the breakwater and re-anchor.
Cellular coverage is great for ATT and TMOB.
The only other services would be beyond the state park to the north along ME-77 / Bowery Beach Road. There are a few restaurants. But it's all a long walk.View location on the Waterway Guide Explorer

However it is exposed to the swell from the east southeast and northeast. I have spent numerous pleasant nights here; but I have also left as soon as I arrived if conditions were not good, so pick your weather. The Island is beautiful with easy shore access and no one except perhaps a caretaker or two ashore. There are sheep on the island and a big barn and caretakers cottage but I have never seen much human activity. I haven't been here for several years so things may have changed since then. Highly recommended anchorage when conditions are good. Despite being a stone's throw from Portland you will feel like you are isolated way down east.
