So many lobster pots its hard to anchor without risking swinging into one. Otherwise a great anchorage except in strong northerly winds. A little southerly swell may roll in at high tide but its not much of an issue. The extremely generous owners of Harbor Island welcome you ashore on the beach in the SW corner of the anchorage. Lovely trails to the wild western shore. Just stay away from their home.

Good protection except from NW. Very few local pleasures boats on moorings; no lobster boats and few lobster boys. Many seals on the off shore ledges at low tide. Access to hiking trails on the next point to the south.

This can be a great anchorage and a perfect stop on the trip east or west. However it is exposed to the swell from the east southeast and northeast. I have spent numerous pleasant nights here; but I have also left as soon as I arrived if conditions were not good, so pick your weather. The Island is beautiful with easy shore access and no one except perhaps a caretaker or two ashore. There are sheep on the island and a big barn and caretakers cottage but I have never seen much human activity. I haven't been here for several years so things may have changed since then. Highly recommended anchorage when conditions are good. Despite being a stone's throw from Portland you will feel like you are isolated way down east.
