Tides and winds make it a Challenge to get the anchor to set. We dragged at 2:30 am. Was set for 18 hrs in 20 mph wind then drag again.

Tucked to the West of the Channel about 150 feet and 200 - 250 feet south of R2. This is a convenient place to stage trip to Grand Bahama. There is the current here that trumps the wind but holding is good in 8 - 12 feet of water. Water is clear on the incoming tide so it is a good place to inspect/clean your bottom before/after trips. Peanut island is a nice trip if you are waiting for weather. Shore access at Riviera Marina (fee). There may be others we are not aware of. The port is close and it is very well lit. Makes it easy for pre-dawn departures. Beware of large vessels entering and exiting harbor as well as holding positions off shore during darkness.

Dredging barges at work in the channel, large cruise and freight ship movement. Mega yachts being moved N & S in the channel. Weekend on Peanut island bring the crowds and wakes create a tough dinghy ride. Aldo note the tides are stronger in the centre of the western side of the anchoring area. No real dinghy landing. The fuel dock will charge $15 for 3 hours use. I was able to tie the dinghy at the SW corner of the Blue Herron Bridge and do Laundry and shop groceries at Publix (2-3 minute walk-on the NW of Blue Herron Blvd)

We found an 18 foot hole just off the houses on the inlet and anchored just off the channel going south. It held very well but we did spin around quite a bit. During the day, shore access is no issue for pets as you can go to peanut island. They don't allow landing on the island after sunset. Nights however aren't so great and problematic finding a spot to take dogs to shore. We ventured over toward the marina to the west but we're lucky to not have been kicked out.

We anchored just southwest of where the anchorage is listed on the map. There is an upwelling just south of where the anchorage is listed on the map. This is not related to any tidal change. It is a constant flowing of water that pushes to the surface. Combined with the tidal change, we spun in circles. We were in 8 ft of water. At one point the anchor chain went under the boat, circled around forward and I could see the anchor just off my port side, 5 feet from my boat. I was facing away from the wide in 15 knots of wind. Other boats that were further south didn't seem to have any issues. The strange water anomaly must be the cause. It looks like a fresh water spring flowing up. Same amount of water flowing from it in high and low tide. Freaky.

Despite the proximity to the commercial hub this was a peaceful quiet overnight anchorage. Plenty of space for dozens of boats. Good holding in sand. Depths of 5 - 15 feet. Rarely felt a boat wake.
