Life moves slowly in this welcoming village. The harbor is the heart of Oriental, with scenic views of the water, boats and marinas. It's a great place to relax and enjoy the peaceful surroundings. Boats and bikes rest against dock pilings and porch railings. Talking and walking may not be considered official recreational activities in most towns but in Oriental, they fit with the feel of a quaint waterfront town where biking, sailing, kayaking, fishing, and boating are popular pastimes. Long known as the "Sailing Capital of North Carolina," Oriental is blessed with wide waters, steady winds and easy access to dozen of creeks and estuaries. The town lives up to its moniker with numerous boating options for boating services and supplies including a West Marine at 1104 Broad St. (252-249-3200) and sail repair, cleaning and canvas work close to Town Dock at 603 Hodges St., 252-249-0739). Village Marine Hardware has some marine supplies and great customer service at 804 Broad St. (252-249-1211).
The annual Croaker Festival is a celebration of Oriental's fishing heritage and includes live music, food, arts and crafts, and a parade. It is held the last week in June. The oriental Boat Show in held in April. This annual event draws thousands of visitors to Oriental each year, with hundreds of boats on display, vendors and live music. As a nod to the town's mascot, dragon boat races are held every August. (Dragons lurk throughout the village.)
