This is a marvelous anchorage in settled weather. When there is much of a swell from east or west with limited southerly or northerly component, one or two lucky souls will find protection in the southern end of the lagoon. Anchoring too close to the north end, however, could expose you to uncomfortable swells.

It is isolated and you will often be mostly alone at night. During the day though, because it is so close to Bimini, a half-dozen or so day-trippers should be expected, including sightseeing boats bringing tourists to feed the stingrays which continuously patrol the eastern side of the northern tip of Gun Cay. The rays are docile, but quite unafraid, and so are quick to gather near anyone walking in the water there, expecting to have morsels of fish scraps held out to them.

Snorkeling throughout the lagoon can yield lobster in the rocks and conch on the grass flats. Of course there are likely to be a few sharks on patrol.

As should be expected throughout the Bahamas, take care to set your anchor in one of the sand patches and anticipate swinging 180° or so with the tidal currents.

We anchored on the northeast side of Gun Cay in front of the second beach down from honeymoon harbor. Mostly grass but a few sandy spots. We held fine in 15 kn wimds from the south. Not flat, but comfortable enough. A great place to dinghy in with the dog. Good cell service. A couple rays met us a t the beach looking for handouts.

Had good holding for two nights on the west side of the inlet. Winds from the SE and east, we were protected from the rolling Gulf Stream. Was busy with the Miami crowd until about 5 pm, then we had it to ourselves for the night; next day we got several boats in to visit and it filled up for the night. So busy place, but very nice and protected. Stingrays and turtles made for a great experience. Sand and grass bottom inside with deep water 7-10 ft with good holding

Great day anchorage with a pretty Bahamian beach. Poor holding in shallow sand and weed along with occasional surge and moderate current makes an uncomfortable night, however. Easy navigation between rocks from west or northeast where you will find no less than 8 feet of water. Popular stop over for the Miami weekender crowd, so it is perhaps best enjoyed during the week. Stingrays will meet your dinghy, expecting to be fed. Fabulous shallow snorkeling in the rocks near shore and lots of wildlife. 3 bars of BTC 3G cell coverage.
