Block Island Sound, RI
While the odds are good for a trouble-free crossing, Block Island Sound should always be accorded proper respect. Easy swells can become seas in minutes. Fog is frequent, sometimes patchy and at other times all-encompassing and unnerving.
Often called the “Bermuda of the North,” the temperatures on Block Island are often 10 degrees cooler than the mainland in summer and warmer than the mainland in winter. It might be foggy, cool and damp during the early morning and evening but sometimes when fog is heavy outside the breakwaters, the sun is shining on the island proper.
