Two miles across East Passage from Newport on Conanicut Island is the summer resort and residential town of Jamestown, a popular stop for the cruising boater.
There are excellent restaurants and shops in an idyllic village setting, full-service marine facilities and good places to walk or cycle amid vistas of crashing surf, sheer cliffs, rolling pastures and woodlands.
The view across The Dumplings toward Newport is glorious, and nearby Fort Wetherill State Park is great for walks, picnics and exploration of the World War II fortifications. The Fort area is also a popular diving spot.
