Coconut Grove, FL
Part of the City of Miami, Coconut Grove is known to locals as "The Grove." Unlike the rest of Miami, low-key and restful Coconut Grove preserves much of the ambiance of traditional Florida. Take a stroll down the charming streets in an area known for its unique architecture and bohemian vibe. At night, The Grove has a vibrant nightlife scene with plenty of options for dining and entertainment.
Coconut Grove was once a seaplane base for the enormous Pan American clippers flying to the Caribbean and South America. The airport complex took up all of Dinner Key and a large part of the adjacent mainland was designed to look like an airplane when viewed from above.
If you wish to explore further afield (transportation required), the lush Kampong Botanical Garden is to the south with flowering trees and tropical fruit including more than 50 types of mango. This is a great place to relax and take in the scenery (4013 Douglas Rd., 305-442-7169).
