J.N. “Ding” Darling National Wildlife Refuge, FL

J.N. “Ding” Darling National Wildlife Refuge, FL

The 6,354-acre J.N. “Ding” Darling National Wildlife Refuge takes up much of 12-mile-long Sanibel Island mainly along the northern (Pine Island Sound) side. The refuge also serves as headquarters for several small wildlife refuges on nearby islands.

During the nesting season mariners are asked not to land on these rookery islands. The refuge offers nature walks and an interpretive center. Even the most casual visitor will inevitably see alligators, anhinga (“snakebirds”), roseate spoonbills, snowy egrets, wood storks and great blue herons. Pink flamingos are seen quite often as well.
