Hyannis, MA
Hyannis grew into a busy fishing and trade port in the 1800s and Congress authorized building of a lighthouse at South Hyannis in 1848. (The light was discontinued in 1929.) Today, Hyannis is the largest community on Cape Cod. For cruisers, the town's attractions are close at hand, just a little more than 1 mile away from the waterfront. The beaches are very plentiful and popular. Kalmus Beach has great wind and surf for windsurfers, while Veterans Beach is a great family beach and is the home of historical shrines honoring John F. Kennedy and the Korean War Memorial. Keyes Beach is known for beautiful sand and has a snack bar and picnic tables.
