Barnstable, MA
Barnstable is the largest community on Cape Cod. It is made up of seven villages: Barnstable, Centerville, Cotuit, Hyannis (including Hyannis Port), Marston Mills, Osterville and West Barnstable. The town was named after a village in Devon, England. The first settlers were farmers but fishing and salt soon became major industries. Before the arrival of the railroads towards the end of the 1800s there were as many as 800 ships harbored there.
Barnstable is about 70 miles southeast of Boston, which made it a popular summer location for prominent 19th-century Bostonians. Some of the most famous people to have summered in Barnstable included Presidents Ulysses S. Grant, Grover Cleveland and, of course, the Kennedys. Given its location, beaches and wide variety of shops, it is no wonder that tourists come in droves to the Barnstable area.
